Must Haves – Infant and Nursery Products

1) Keekaroo Peanut Diaper Changer

I have absolutely loved the Keekaroo Peanut Changer and am so glad that I purchased it. This was definitely a splurge, as most diaper changing pads are less expensive. This changer has been fabulous and is still something that I use on a daily basis. The Keekaroo Peanut Changer is different from the other changing pads for a number of reasons. First, the pad is impermeable to fluids and is very easy to clean. I am able to wipe it down very quickly after use. There is no need to place a cover over the pad. That is a huge bonus since there are some days where messes occur on more than one occasion. I already have enough laundry and don’t need to add more if I don’t have to! If there is one thing I have learned as a new mom it is that it’s worth paying more money for a product that will make diaper changing as hassle-free as possible. Second, the shell is constructed out of Dura-Soft Material that limits the growth of bacteria and mold. This is nice since I don’t really feel like having my changing pad function as a Petri dish. Third, the Keekaroo is super durable and is made out of materials that prevent deterioration of the shell. This changer is crack and puncture resistant. Fourth, this changer comes in a variety of fun colors that are sure to match any chic nursery. I was so excited when I found that they had a color that perfectly matched my nursery. Overall, the Keekaroo Peanut Changer may be an expensive product, but it’s built to withstand daily use. At the end of the day you won’t feel bad shelling out the money for this.

2) Halo SleepSack

While my baby was in the Special Care Nursery the nurses would often swaddle him. He seemed to really enjoy this and I continued with swaddling once we returned home. Pediatricians recommend “back to sleep” and advise against placing blankets in the crib in order to promote a safe sleep environment. Once my baby started rolling onto his tummy I transitioned him from a swaddle to a Halo SleepSack. The Halo SleepSack is a great alternative to loose blankets in the crib that can be dangerous for a baby. Essentially, the SleepSack functions as a wearable blanket that is safe and provides a way to keep your baby nice and warm. I feel much better knowing my baby is snug as a bug in a rug, especially on cold Minnesota nights. The design of this product provides ample room for babies to kick and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute has recognized the SleepSack as being “Hip Healthy.” Changing a diaper is simple because the zipper is inverted and the SleepSack does not need to be removed. This is a great feature, as there have been a few occasions where I’ve had to change a diaper in the middle of the night. The SleepSack is made out of a variety of materials such as cotton, micro-fleece, and cotton sweater knit, just to name a few. It comes in different sizes, so it’s pretty easy to find one that will comfortably and safely fit your baby. Also, they are made out of cute material with many different patterns to choose from. My son, and now my daughter, have used the SleepSack and they both have slept like champs!

3) Pacifier Clips

I have yet to meet a baby that will keep a pacifier in their mouth at all times without dropping it onto the floor at some point. If you’re like me, you think this is super gross. That’s why I think that the pacifier clip is another must-have for all new moms. I love that I can attach this to my baby’s outfit and his pacifier will not fall to the ground every other second. My little guy only used a pacifier for the first few month of his life and then he found his thumb. Despite the fact that he no longer used a pacifier I continued to use the clip for small teether toys when traveling. I found that he would hold onto a teether and then with no warning would often throw it onto the dirty airplane floor. That’s when I realized that I could continue using the pacifier clip. This worked really well and saved the teether toys from the gross germs on the floor. My daughter seems to really enjoy her pacifier, so once again I’m using these cute clips all the time. The great thing is that I ordered a zillion new ones with adorable fabric patterns for my sweet little girl. I recommend purchasing the pacifier clips from FortyFourNorth. The clips are made out of lead-free material and the straps are 100% cotton. This is a great product that you don’t want to overlook!

4) Fisher-Price Precious Planet 2-in-1 Projection Mobile

I’ll be honest, I did not have a mobile on my baby registry, nor did I have one on my son’s crib the first few months of his life. I hadn’t really thought about purchasing one and at the time didn’t really think it was something that I needed to add to his crib. After visiting my parents I completely changed my mind. My mom had put a mobile that was mine when I was a baby on the changing table in the nursery she created for her favorite grandson. He absolutely loved watching the animals go around and enjoyed the music. My grandparents saw how much he enjoyed it and when they found out he did not have a mobile they jumped on the opportunity to purchase him one. The Fisher-Price Precious Planet 2-in-1 Projection Mobile has been a fantastic addition to my son’s crib. I’m pretty picky when it comes to taking care of the crib and was super happy when I found out that the mobile would attach without damaging the crib, as it does not require hardware or adhesives. It is very easy to attach and has sturdy buckles to ensure that it’s not going to fall off. The straps are adjustable, so I had no problem getting this to fit on my son’s crib that has wide rails. It comes with four plush animals that are cute and fun for baby to watch. The mobile has a variety of listening options that include classical lullabies from Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. It will also play nature and ocean sounds, as well as heartbeat and white noise womb sounds. Once you’ve chosen a listening option it will play for 20 continuous minutes. There is an option to project a fun light show that can easily be seen on the canopy, which keeps the images close and easy to focus on. When my little guy started pulling himself up it was time to remove the mobile. The light show can then be projected onto the ceiling and all of the listening options are still available. A remote control is included so you can adjust the settings without bothering your baby. I found that I could make the animals quit spinning and turn the music off from the doorway once my son fell asleep. Overall, both of my kids have loved this product and I highly recommend this for your little one.

5) Trend Lab Fleece CribWrap Rail Covers

So you can imagine the sheer panic I experienced the day I placed my baby in his crib for one minute and returned to find him on the rail of his crib like the happiest beaver on the planet. Seriously, I only left him for about a minute and I was shocked to see a couple of nice tooth marks on his crib which I splurged on. Staying true to myself, I jumped online and immediately started looking up ways to protect the crib rails. While my mom was able to find some directions to do a DIY project, I didn’t think I had the time to embark on such a task. Thankfully, I was able to find the Trend Lab Fleece CribWrap Rail Covers on Amazon. The nice thing about these covers is that they are designed for wide crib rails. They are made out of fleece and have a waterproof backing. The covers are safe for babies and free of PVC, lead, phthalate, and BPA. I was able to purchase two long rail covers and a set of side rail covers to provide maximal protective coverage. I ordered the white CribWraps since they match the nursery the best, but there are many other colors to choose from. In order to avoid my mistake, I recommend putting the CribWraps in place as soon as your baby is able to pull up independently. I will never again have my baby beaver bite on his crib!

6) Munchkin Arm and Hammer Diaper Pail

If you’re planning to use disposable diapers I think that you’ll want to consider purchasing the Munchkin Arm and Hammer Diaper Pail. I have been very pleased with this product, as it is easy to use and it really does a great job of keeping the odor contained within the pail. The lid of the pail contains a vented baking soda dispenser that releases a small amount of baking soda each time the lid is closed, which absorbs and eliminates odor. This dispenser can be filled as needed with baking soda and therefore does not require you to purchase any additional replacement dispensers. The pail has a patented self-sealing system which keeps the disposable bag sealed when the lid is closed and even maintains the seal when the lid is reopened. The bags can hold up to 25 diapers and easily snap shut once full for easy disposal. The disposable bags can be purchased separately. There is a door on the front of the pail that can be opened and I’ve found that this makes it convenient for me to determine how full the bag is. I’ve found that when I open the lid to dispose of a soiled diaper I do not notice any odors wafting out. It’s actually quite amazing that this pail sits in my nursery with all those stinky diapers!
